Karnataka: Free electricity sought for government schools

June 26, 2023

With just days left for the presentation of the newly elected government’s first budget announcement, government schools in Karnataka are seeking to be included under the scheme of free electricity.

Government schools’ representatives, who met with chief minister Siddaramaiah recently submitted a memorandum to him in this regard. The congress government will present its budget on July 7.

The Karnataka State Primary School Teachers Association has also sought that both water and electricity bills be waived off by the government. As per their estimates, government schools foot a bill anywhere between Rs 7,000 to Rs. 8,000 per month.

“For a state that is providing free electricity to all households, it must not be a challenge to meet the needs of government schools which cater to mostly the under-privileged. Most schools are eligible to get a maintenance grant of Rs 25,000. But we are not being provided the same,” said Chandrshekar Nugli, secretary, Karnataka State Primary School Teachers Association.

He said that a meeting was held with the chief minister where the association has sought that the announcement be made to make the announcement. This, he said, would benefit over 43,000 schools.
