Overview

Mount Hermon School is a co-educational, day cum boarding school affiliated with the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE). It is sited on Lebong cart road in the town of Darjeeling, in West Bengal. It follows the American education style and offers Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE) and Indian School Certificate (ISC) programmes at the secondary and higher secondary levels respectively. The school was founded in 1895 under the auspices of the Methodist Episcopalian Church of America by Emma Knowles, the founder principal. It is the only school in Darjeeling hills which offers day boarding and full boarding facilities for both boys and girls from kindergarten to class XII. The school is headed by the principal G.W. Fernandez.

Campus

The school stands on 70 acres in the Himalayan foothills, 6,200 ft above sea-level and four kilometres north of Darjeeling. It can accommodate 450 boarding students.

The main building has a three-storey structure of native grey stone and reinforced concrete, with a northern facade of 61 metres facing across the valley at Kanchenjunga. To the south are two wings, the west housing the chapel and assembly hall, and the east including classrooms, dormitories, and staff accommodations. All girls and the younger boys are housed in dormitories in the main building, which also contains an Infant Department and Junior School classrooms, a music room and practice rooms for piano, staff and students’ dining rooms, lounge, library, craft room, and administrative offices. Senior boys (from class X to XII) reside in Fernhill and students from class VII to IX in the Round Hostel, opened in 1977, while junior boys reside in the Stewart Building, built in 1963. The Stewart Building also includes six classrooms for the senior school, and laboratories for physics, chemistry, biology, and geography.

The school boasts world class facilities for sports such as cricket, basketball, hockey, football, badminton, softball, volleyball, swimming and athletics.

Academics

It follows the American education style and is affiliated with the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE), New Delhi, offering the ICSE and ISC programmes at the secondary and higher secondary levels respectively. The school is divided into three departments, namely the infant department (KG to standard II); junior school (standard III to standard V) and the senior school (standard VI to standard XII). The subjects taught include English, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, history, geography, civics, computers, commerce, accountancy, political science, physical education, business studies, scripture etc., depending on the standard and the choice of stream. Vernacular languages offered include Hindi, Bengali, Nepali, Tibetan, Mizo (Lushai), Dzongkha and Chinese (depending upon the number of students). The school facilitates sports and games such as football, cricket, swimming, basketball, volleyball, throwball, badminton, table tennis and gymnasium, among others. Music forms an important part of life in Mount Hermon. Singing classes are offered twice a week from kindergarten to standard VIII. Besides, piano, violin and guitar lessons are also offered to interested students. Inter house competitions are organized among the students for quiz, debate, elocution, extempore, music, competition, basketball, football, swimming, cricket, among others.

Admission

The application form can be downloaded from the school website. Applications for admissions for the next academic year are open till the end of September each year. The admission fee and security deposit must be paid before admission can be confirmed. During admission, the class assigned to a student cannot be considered final until several weeks of observation and testing have passed. Careful attention is given to placing new students in the correct class, and to the promotion of children from class to class. The study programme of each pupil is finalized for the year only after the beginning of term tests.

Age criteria for admissions are as follows:

  • Class KG: 4+ years as on 28th February of the year of admission
  • Class 1: 5+ years

Being a boarding school, Mount Hermon offers comfortable boarding facilities to its students with modern amenities. Boarders are grouped according to age in well-ventilated and spacious dormitories. Full-time matrons look after junior and middle school pupils, while members of the staff also act as wardens and matrons for the seniors. The spacious dining hall provides well-balanced, vegetarian and non-vegetarian meals and snacks for the students.
