In an effort to enhance math learning outcomes for over five lakh students in 48,000 state-run schools, the Uttar Pradesh (U.P.) government has announced a new partnership with Khan Academy India. This collaboration aims to provide high-quality math learning content in Hindi to students and teachers, seamlessly integrating it into classrooms across the Department of Basic Education, Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya (KGBV), Department of Secondary Education, and schools overseen by the Social Welfare Department.
Khan Academy India, a not-for-profit organization incorporated in India, was founded in 2006 by Khan Academy Inc and Tata Trusts. Its mission is to provide free, world-class education for millions of learners in India. Through this partnership, the government of Uttar Pradesh aims to ensure that every student has access to the tools and resources needed to excel in math and reach their full potential.
Vijay Kiran Anand, the Director General of School Education in Uttar Pradesh, emphasized the significance of this collaboration, stating, “This collaboration between the Government of Uttar Pradesh and Khan Academy India is a significant step towards ensuring that every student has access to the tools and resources they need to excel in math and reach their full potential.” He also expressed pride in the program’s success in KGBVs and the promising results it has shown in improving math learning outcomes.
The partnership between the Uttar Pradesh government and Khan Academy India initially focused on improving math learning outcomes in KGBVs since 2021. The positive results achieved in these schools have now prompted the expansion of this partnership to benefit a larger number of students.
Khan Academy’s integration into the classroom environment has revolutionized the educational delivery system, earning praise from both teachers and students. By the end of the second year, the program had reached 72,000 students in 746 KGBVs, with over 24,000 students engaging in math practice for 60 minutes per month, leading to improved learning outcomes.
As part of this expanded partnership, Khan Academy’s tech-based modules for teachers will be hosted on the DIKSHA portal, ensuring that all teachers across the state have access to world-class content and Hindi-medium math learning resources. The Khan Academy team will also provide hands-on support to 48,000 teachers, guiding them on how to utilize online teaching resources in their preferred language and offering personalized learning based on individual student progress data.
Swati Vasudevan, Managing Director of Khan Academy India, expressed the organization’s commitment to providing a free, world-class education to all children. “We will continue to look for ways to expand our reach to enable educators and serve students across the country in their native languages,” she stated, adding that the partnership with the U.P. government aligns with Khan Academy’s vision, and they are honored to strengthen their commitment as partners.
It seems, this extended partnership between the U.P. government and Khan Academy India will further strengthen the educational infrastructure in Uttar Pradesh, fostering a culture of excellence and innovation in math education. Teachers will receive better support to assist their students, while students will benefit from engaging and personalized learning experiences.
The participation of more students in daily math practice is expected to improve the overall quality of math education in the region. The initiative is supported by HDFC Bank under its corporate social responsibility (CSR) umbrella brand, ‘Parivartan’. Nusrat Pathan, Head of CSR at HDFC Bank, highlighted the importance of investing in the youth and providing them with the best resources for optimal learning. Pathan expressed confidence that Khan Academy’s expertise in addressing student needs and making quality education accessible to all will complement HDFC Bank’s efforts under Parivartan.
