Water crisis hits Bengaluru’s private schools, managements seek government intervention

March 8, 2024

As Bengaluru continues to battle a severe water crisis, private unaided schools in Bengaluru have urged the government’s intervention to ensure water supply to schools.

Several private schools across the city have been battling to meet the everyday water requirements after the borewells have run dry and private water tankers have been quoting an exorbitant price to supply water.

On Friday, D Shashi Kumar, general secretary, Associated Managements of Private Schools in Karnataka released a media statement seeking immediate intervention of the government in this regard.

“We are staring at an acute water crisis. Schools need a regular water supply for sanitary and some hygiene purposes. But there is no water at all. The Bengaluru Water Supply and Sewerage Board has not been supplying water to some areas for several weeks now. Even if they do, it is only for an hour in the middle of the night. Many borewells are dry. We are in a dire situation. Schools must function.

“Board exams are just days away. We cannot even switch to hybrid education now. Atleast for the next fortnight, we must have students attend classes in schools. Students can be requested to carry drinking water from their homes. But atleast for toilets, we must ensure water supply. We urge the government that since the borewells and tankers are under their control now, priority must be given to schools,” said Kumar.

Over the past month, Bengaluru has been reeling under a severe water shortage crisis with several high-rise buildings in the city running dry. Residents had complained to the government about skyrocketing prices for water tankers following which the state government has now taken under their control.

On Friday, one such report emerged where residents formed a bee line at Konanakunte Forum Mall’s washrooms as there was no water supply in the adjoining Prestige Falcon City.
