Jamiat Ulama Rajasthan opposes government’s Surya Namaskar mandate in schools

February 13, 2024

Jamiat Ulama Rajasthan has expressed strong disapproval of the state government’s directive to conduct mass Surya Namaskar in schools on February 15. In a meeting, the state working Committee of Jamiat Ulama Rajasthan deemed it an unwarranted interference in religious matters and a violation of constitutional freedom of religion. The resolution, moved by Maulana Abdul Wahid Khatri, urges the Muslim community to refrain from sending their children to school on Surya Saptami, February 15, and to boycott the mandated event.

Simultaneously, several Muslim organizations, including Jamiat Ulama Rajasthan, have collectively filed a petition in the Rajasthan High Court seeking the annulment of the February 15 program and the compulsory nature of Surya Namaskar in schools. The hearing is scheduled for February 14, with lawyer Zahoor Naqvi representing Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind.

The resolution emphasizes the religious perspective, stating that while Surya is revered in Hindu society, Muslims consider worshiping anyone other than Allah as forbidden. Jamiat Ulama stresses that imposing such practices on people of different faiths, particularly children, under the guise of yoga and physical exercise, contradicts constitutional principles, violates religious freedom, and infringes on child rights.

The organization calls for the state government to engage the Muslim community in discussions on yoga-related issues, avoiding unnecessary controversies. It further urges the prompt withdrawal of the controversial order to preserve the democratic fabric of the country.
