Maharashtra: Eggs and bananas added to mid-day meal menu

November 8, 2023

The Maharashtra government has decided to incorporate eggs into the mid-day meals served to students in state-run schools. Alongside the usual khichdi made from rice and lentils, students will now receive boiled eggs, egg pulao, or egg biryani once a week—either on Wednesdays or Fridays. Vegetarian students will receive a banana or another fruit on these particular days, according to a Government Resolution (GR) released on Tuesday.

This change will take effect in the ongoing academic year (2023-24). The provision of eggs is part of the Pradhan Mantri Poshan Shakti Nirman Scheme. It entails offering eggs once a week for 23 weeks, enhancing the regular nutrition provided. Rural areas will have the school management committee procuring eggs to provide the mentioned egg-based dishes on Wednesdays or Fridays. In urban areas, the central kitchen providing agency will handle the distribution of eggs.

This modification applies to students in Classes 1 to 8 under the mid-day meal scheme.
